b-Glucans in Dietary Supplements, Animal Feed & Cosmetics - Current Status and Outlook

b-Glucans comprise mainly 1,3 glucose linkages also combined with 1,6 or 1,4 linkages. There are three sources of b-Glucans :

  • barley and oats
  • yeast cell walls
  • bacteria
b-Glucans from yeast cell walls are used as cosmetics, dietary supplements and ingredients in animal feed. Another b-glucan, curdlan, is derived by bacterial fermentation, and is used as thickener in foods.

In this report we have discussed the current status of b-glucans from yeast cell walls and bacterial fermentation, reviewing their applications, as nutraceuticals in cosmetic ingredients and in food products. Producers, output, prices and markets are reviewed and the future market by 2015 is assessed.
