w-3 & w-6 Polyunsaturated Fatty acids PUFAs - Current Status & Outlook by 2010

Polyunsaturated fatty acids [PUFAs] include w--3 [DHA, EPA, ARA, GLA] from fish oils, plant oils and algae. Algal fermentation routes for DHA, EPA and ARA have been successfully developed within the past five years.

PUFAs have established successful outlets as:

  • Dietary supplements for cholesterol reduction, cardiovascular and various health indications'
  • food additives in margarine, bread, milk and eggs
  • infant foods for pre-term and first-age formulations

This survey reviews the output, producers, prices and applications of PUFAs from fish oils, plant oils and algae sources. Producers of PUFAs in Europe, N. America and Japan are identified and their product range and sales are given. In a final Executive Summary the projected markets for PUFAs by 2010 is discussed for:
