Formic acid or hydrogen carboxylic acid, HCOOH, is a strongly caustic acid produced
synthetically either from hydrocarbons or carbon monoxide. The principal use of formic
acid is as preservative in feed grains and silage. In this survey the production process,
applications, producers, output , prices and outlook by 2015 are reviewed.
