Fermentation, Biotechnology & Healthcare Carbohydrate Feedstocks for the Fermentation Industry - Current Status and Outlook by 2015
Carbohydrate feedstocks play a key role in the economics of the fermentation process.
Some processes require a specific feedstock, but where a choice is possible,
availability and price are the deciding factors. The EU now offers production
refunds for sugar and glucose syrups [from maize and wheat] when used in fermentation.
The report analyses the total consumption of carbohydrate raw materials
[i.e. molasses, glucose syrups, sugar, starch] for fermentation products,
including: organic acids, amino acids, enzymes, antibiotics, polysaccharides and yeast.
The prices of feedstocks in the U.S. and EU are compared on a fermentability basis.
The cost contribution of feedstocks to the price of the fermentation product is
determined. Finally we estimate the 2015 demand for specific feedstocks
