Carotenoids - Current Status & Outlook by 2015

Carotenoids have extensive applications as anti-oxidants in dietary supplements, and as colours in foods and beverages as well as pigments in poultry and fish. In this survey we review the six categories of carotenoids:

  • astaxanthin
  • ß-apo-carotenal
  • canthaxanthin
  • ß-carotene
  • lutein/zeaxanthin
  • lycopene
Most carotenoids are produced by chemical synthesis [related to vitamin A process route], although microbial fermentation processes have been developed for astaxanthin and ß-carotene, whilst lycopene can also be obtained by extraction from natural sources. In this survey we have reviewed the technology, applications, producers, output, prices and markets for these six carotenoids.

In a final Executive Summary the projected markets for all these carotenoids are estimated and growth opportunities discussed.
