Carotenoids - Current Status & Outlook by 2015
Carotenoids have extensive applications as anti-oxidants in dietary
supplements, and as colours in foods and beverages as well as pigments
in poultry and fish. In this survey we review the six categories of
carotenoids:
- astaxanthin
- ß-apo-carotenal
- canthaxanthin
- ß-carotene
- lutein/zeaxanthin
- lycopene
Most carotenoids are produced by chemical synthesis [related to vitamin A process route],
although microbial fermentation processes have been developed for astaxanthin and ß-carotene, whilst lycopene can also be obtained by extraction from natural sources. In this survey we have reviewed the technology,
applications, producers, output, prices and markets for these six carotenoids.
In a final Executive Summary the projected markets
for all these carotenoids are estimated and growth opportunities discussed.
