Natural Food & Feed Colours - Current Status & Outlook by 2015

The trend towards 'natural' foods, has led in recent years to the substitution of synthetic by natural or nature-identical colours in many food products and feeds.

In this survey we have discussed regulatory aspects for colours in the EU. In a subsequent section we review the technology, applications, output producers, prices, markets and outlook by 2015 for the following food and feed colours:

  • annatto
  • anthocyanins
  • astaxanthin
  • beet juice [betanin]
  • ß-apo-carotenal
  • ß-carotene
  • canthaxanthin
  • capsanthin [paprika extract]
  • caramel
  • cochineal/carmine
  • lutein [tagetes extract]
  • lycopene
The principal feed colours include:

Lutein [tagetes extract] is a yellow pigment for colouration of poultry skin and egg yolk. Capsanthin [paprika extract] is a red pigment often combined with lutein for attaining an orange colour of egg yolk.

Astaxanthin is used as pink pigment in feed for salmon and trout. Canthaxanthin has some use as pigment in poultry. ß-carotene also has some applications as feed colour.
