In recent years very few new fermentation facilities have been constructed, causing a shortage of fermentation and biotechnology capacity. Novel fermentation products developed by start-up companies rely on tolling facilities which are increasingly difficult to locate, especially if sophisticated down-stream extraction and purification equipment is required.
