Ethanol from Cellulose

Ethanol from cellulose is the modern version of the alchemists’ quest to transform base metals into gold. Enzyme groups everywhere have attempted to develop a cellulase that converts cellulose to glucose. Many cellulases have appeared but with no success. Within the past year an Italian cellulose- to- ethanol plant has been constructed claiming that this actually works. Time will tell.
